How cost management works

Project kick-off

At the start of a project, our cost management team will:

  • provide initial budget costs
  • advise on options and feasibility

Once you’ve agreed an option for your project, our quantity surveyor (QS) team will develop a cost plan, working with the project manager and design team. We update the cost plan at each stage through to tender, supported by expert advice on costings and a risk register.

Tender and procurement

At the tender stage, our QS team prepares contract documents for inviting tenders. We handle the whole tender process, identifying and prequalifying potential bidders, evaluating tenders and making recommendations.

We prepare documentation for all types of procurement:

  • design and build
  • specification and drawings
  • lump-sum contracts (where the project price is agreed before work starts)
  • re-measurable contracts (where the project price may change)

We also prepare:

  • schedules of rates (setting out the rates that contractors will use to price the work)
  • bills of quantities (setting out specific amounts of work needed on a project)
  • pricing documents

Contract administration

Once a successful contractor is appointed, our QS team will administer the contract, whatever its type.

We provide full financial management, including:

  • preparing interim valuations and final accounts
  • change management
  • cost reporting
  • financial forecasts
  • value engineering

We’ll continue to advise you on contractual matters throughout the works until handover. We’ll also conclude the final account with the contractor.
